Black or White

source

Black or White

Choose one color--black or white--and explore the depths of meaning the color has for you.  Write a poem that immerses itself in EITHER black or white, but not both.  Don't even mention the other color in your poem.

Ideas to spark your writing:

What emotions live inside it?
Where does this color live in unexpected places?
What does this color remember or forget?
Use CONCRETE imagery rather than abstract declarations.
Think about including a surprising metaphor.
Try not to write cliches such as "dark as night" or "pure as snow"
Another idea: write from the perspective of the color:  "I am black" or "I am white."

The goal is to make your reader experience black or white as they never have.....through your eyes

I hope that this prompt will make you think, as it will make ME think. I look forward to reading what you come up with!

When you have written your poem, link it with Mr. Linky below.  Mr. Linky will stay active until Sunday at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.  Please remember to visit the other poets who share.

  1. Good morning, poets! I hope this prompt will inspire each of you in some way. It seems, without consulting each other, that the four of us prompters all wrote on "black." Choose the color you wish, but I hope some of you will consider writing on "white" as well. I will continue to check for new entries throughout the week! Enjoy.

  2. This prompt brought forth a poem that surprised me, Mary. A thought-provoking prompt. Some thoughts that are deeply felt and needed to come out. Thank you.

    1. Sherry, poetry is definitely a way to get those thoughts out! And interesting when a poem surprises even the writer!

  3. I found this prompt challenging! Wow! Finally, I stepped away from blackness and whiteness, and talked about clothes instead. It's a bit of a copout, but it's also true. Thank you for your prompt and poem.
