and the village is flooded

       with children”— Kobayashi Issa (1763-1828)

 

This haiku by the Japanese poet Kobayashi Issa, better known as simply Issa, a pen name meaning Cup-of-tea, celebrates a new beginning; winter is coming to an end and an active life is about to begin.

Every New Year we wish to see the shift from the darkness to the promise of light; we want to sing, “Hope is the thing with feathers”.

We do have faith in mankind.
