We're back in a new incarnation, and we're calling all poets who blog! Our Mighty Foursome plans to inspire ourselves and other poets through Wednesday prompts.
How did it get to be the END of August already? I remember when I was a child thinking that when August came (though the weather was beautiful) summer was over, I dreaded going back to school. When I was teaching, I felt the same way. I wanted my summer break to last and last and last. I still have a kind of dread now in August, realizing that summer is winding down, that autumn is on the horizon, and winter will follow not far behind. And, to be honest, I always wonder how many more summers I will yet see.
This week I would like to write something about August. What is happening in your life THIS August? What are your feelings about August in general? What memories does "August" elicit? When you were young, did you ever have a 'summer love'? Any special August event or happening stand out? What is August like where you live? Farmers' markets? Activities? Weather?
I shared the video of the Taylor Swift song "August" above. I quite like this song, don't you? Here are the lyrics. I have underlined a few lines that you might use as inspiration for writing if you are stymied :
Lyrics
Salt air, and the rust on your door I never needed anything more Whispers of "Are you sure?" "Never have I ever before"
But I can see us lost in the memory August slipped away into a moment in time 'Cause it was never mine And I can see us twisted in bedsheets August sipped away like a bottle of wine 'Cause you were never mine
Your back beneath the sun Wishin' I could write my name on it Will you call when you're back at school? I remember thinkin' I had you
But I can see us lost in the memory August slipped away into a moment in time 'Cause it was never mine And I can see us twisted in bedsheets August sipped away like a bottle of wine 'Cause you were never mine
Back when we were still changin' for the better Wanting was enough For me, it was enough To live for the hope of it all Cancel plans just in case you'd call And say, "Meet me behind the mall" So much for summer love and saying "us" 'Cause you weren't mine to lose You weren't mine to lose, no
But I can see us lost in the memory August slipped away into a moment in time 'Cause it was never mine And I can see us twisted in bedsheets August sipped away like a bottle of wine 'Cause you were never mine 'Cause you were never mine, never mine
But do you remember? Remember when I pulled up and said, "Get in the car" And then canceled my plans just in case you'd call? Back when I was livin' for the hope of it all, for the hope of it all "Meet me behind the mall"
Remember when I pulled up and said, "Get in the car" And then canceled my plans just in case you'd call? Back when I was livin' for the hope of it all (for the hope of it all)
For the hope of it all For the hope of it all (For the hope of it all) (For the hope of it all)
I look forward to reading what you write. Post the link to your one poem using Mr. Linky below. Say hello to us in the comments if you wish, and be sure to visit the poems of others who link their poems.
