Openings and Closings

source

This week I would like you to write a poem exploring "Openings" or "Closings."  Or perhaps your poem will explore both "Openings and Closings."

A Few Ideas:

Consider literal doors, windows, book covers, cupboards, jewelry boxes, cabinets, gates, etc.

Consider opportunities opening or closing.

Consider a chapter of your life opening or closing.

Consider the closing of a business, a restaurant, a store that was important to you.

Consider conversational openings or closings.

If you are not yet inspired, just put the word "opening" or "closing" on the page and write your poem stream of consciousness to see where it goes. Be surprised where the words will lead you.

A Few Example Poems:

"Doors Opening, Closing On Us" by Marge Piercy

"My Life Closed Twice Before Its Close" by Emily Dickinson

"Opening Doors" by Della Perry

"may my heart always by open to little" by e.e. cummings

I look forward to seeing where words take you this week!

When you have your poem written, link it using Mr. Linky below, and then visit the poems of others who link.  Mr. Linky will close on Sunday night at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.

  1. Greetings Friends! After writing prompts as long as we have, sometimes it is not easy to come up with idea that will resonate with people in some way. I hope this prompt does. Seems it is one that could take a writer down many different paths. I look forward to seeing what paths your writings follow!

  3. It's a beautiful prompt Mary. And challenging, too. I also love all the poems you've shared today, especially e.e. cummings' poem.
