This week I would like you to write a poem exploring "Openings" or "Closings." Or perhaps your poem will explore both "Openings and Closings."
A Few Ideas:
Consider literal doors, windows, book covers, cupboards, jewelry boxes, cabinets, gates, etc.
Consider opportunities opening or closing.
Consider a chapter of your life opening or closing.
Consider the closing of a business, a restaurant, a store that was important to you.
Consider conversational openings or closings.
If you are not yet inspired, just put the word "opening" or "closing" on the page and write your poem stream of consciousness to see where it goes. Be surprised where the words will lead you.
A Few Example Poems:
"Doors Opening, Closing On Us" by Marge Piercy
"My Life Closed Twice Before Its Close" by Emily Dickinson
"Opening Doors" by Della Perry
"may my heart always by open to little" by e.e. cummings
I look forward to seeing where words take you this week!
When you have your poem written, link it using Mr. Linky below, and then visit the poems of others who link. Mr. Linky will close on Sunday night at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.

Greetings Friends! After writing prompts as long as we have, sometimes it is not easy to come up with idea that will resonate with people in some way. I hope this prompt does. Seems it is one that could take a writer down many different paths. I look forward to seeing what paths your writings follow!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mary, for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteSumana, my computer is down, and your site wont take my comment on my tablet. WordPress rejects my password. But i resonate with your poem, especially your mellowness. So interesting about the light in the photos.
ReplyDeleteThank you Sherry. Oh, how awful that the computer is down, Sherry.
DeleteIt's a beautiful prompt Mary. And challenging, too. I also love all the poems you've shared today, especially e.e. cummings' poem.
ReplyDeleteHi Sumana - I don't think my WP comment published either - I love the idea of self as a doorway - Jae
DeleteThank you, Sumana. I like the e.e.cummings poem a lot too.
DeleteThank you Mary - Jae
ReplyDeleteJae Rose, i am so annoyed. I left a long comment but wordpress wont take my sign in on my tablet. Sigh. I miss my computer. I said how much I love your poem. Your opening line drew me in. I love "I dare to dream." At midlife i dared to dream too. I made a change, it took trust and couraage. But it increased my happiness a hundredfold.
DeleteThank you so much Sherry - I really hope you get a new computer soon. Daring to dream does seem exciting :) Thank you
DeleteGlad to read your words, Jae!
DeleteFriends, I have just learned that our poet friend, Chris Olson, the Tired Monk, who was with us during our Poets United years, passed away from cancer in May. He was a lovely man, a fellow Canadian. I loved his Tired Monk poems. His work is still online at Humbucker Poems, where there is a link to his Collecred Works. He will be missed.
ReplyDeleteI always looked forward to his posts. As you say, he will be missed.
DeleteVery sad, Sherry! I remember him well. Such a nice man, and such unique poetry.
DeleteThanks to everyone who participated, and especially thank you to those who commented on other poets' work.
