Home Made

“When you give a homemade gift, you are giving a part of yourself to the recipient. You can’t do that with a mass-produced item.”— Mark Frauenfelder

I have stumbled upon this poem ‘Gate A-4’ by Naomi Shihab Nye and decided this week’s topic to be nothing but Home Made.

Please read the poem.

The word homemade radiates warmth and love just like the poem above. It’s a world in itself where compassion, understanding, kindness have made their little homes. May such caring words live long in a world where everything appears to become homeless every day.

Alan Shepard, the famous astronaut writes, “The first plane ride was a homemade glider my buddy and I built. Unfortunately we didn’t get more than four feet off the ground, because it crashed.”

Homemade list can be endless : food, outfits, jewelry, cards, candles, art and prints and anything of your choice. The list is just a variety of seeds waiting to be a full grown poem.

Certain homemade things might not be even acceptable and you might show your dislike for it too. And why not writing about your love and affection for shop bought things in contrast to home-made items? It’s your choice.

Please link one poem that is your response to the material of this prompt. When you link your poem please visit other links in the spirit of the community.

  1. Sumana, Naomi's poem is a treasure. This is the world I want to live in too. And it is still happening, given all the helpers in California right now. "Not everything is lost." Great message. At first I couldnt think of anything homemade. But once I remembered one, the others came flooding.

    1. "Perhaps home is not just a place
But a state of being" and you are making home real, step by step. Another perfect poem!

    1. Naomi Shihab Nye's words could be felt so deeply. Love your poem too, Mary, specially the repetition of 'silent prayer'.
