The Unspoken
Today I would like you to write about the theme "Unspoken." (Or "Unwritten") I once heard it said that often what is said is as important as what is not said.
Have you ever wanted to say (write) something, but decided not to? What did you prefer to leave unspoken (unwritten)?
Are there unspoken messages we all grow up with-- things that we don't have to be told, but which we know?
What did you leave unspoken that you later wished you had said?
What has someone else left unspoken that you wished they had said?
Here are a few poems that have the theme 'unspoken.' Note how concise they are. No wasted words. I like them both a lot.
Unspoken, A Minimalist Poem on Words Left Unsaid by Shayan Afzal
Poem:
between us, a quiet
filled with all we never said
a breath, a pause
a thousand things I held--
invisible walls built on silence
in the echo of nothing,
i hear everything.
Silent Poem by Margaret Atwood
Silent Poem
Speak to me in your silence
when the words you have cannot
reach the distance between us.
Speak to me in your silence
when the pain you feel
cannot be assuaged by sound.
Speak to me in your silence
when the love you have
is too great for mere words.
Speak to me in your silence
and I will listen,
with a heart that hears
all that is unsaid.
A parallel theme comes to mind. If "The Unspoken" doesn't speak to you, perhaps "The Unwrritten" does. What do you prefer to leave unwritten? Or what is best left unwritten? Or what do you wish was not left unsritten?
I will look forward to what you write about "The Unspoken" or "The Unwritten."
Link your poem below, and please visit the poems of other people who link during the week. Mr. Linky will close on Sunday at 8 pm Eastern.

Good day, Poets! (And I do hope it is a good day for each of you.). I was thinking the other day that so many of my thoughts are unwritten or unspoken for one reason or another, for better or for worse. I decided "unspoken" would be a good subject to write about, as I am sure most (all?) of you have some things that are unspoken too. I hope you will find the prompt challenging and interesting. I look forward to reading what you write!
ReplyDeleteGreat and timely prompt, Mary, in these times when peoples' views are so polarized and one wishes to avoid conflict. I'm looking foreard to the responses, too.
