We're back in a new incarnation, and we're calling all poets who blog! Our Mighty Foursome plans to inspire ourselves and other poets through Wednesday prompts.
Greetings, Friends! This week our theme is "Heroes." You can approach this in many different ways. You can write about a hero from the present or the past. You can write about a heroic deed. A well-known one or one performed by some average man/woman on the street. Or perhaps you can write a poetic definition of hero. What does it take to be a hero in today's world? Who are the real heroes today? How can poets be heroes?
I am featuring the song "Heroes" by David Bowie. Funny - I didn't like him when he was popular and alive. I find I like his music now. I am highlighting the stanza of this song that I find meaningful right now. What would it be like to be a hero for one day? What would YOU do on that day?
Lyrics
I, I will be king And you, you will be queen Though nothing will drive them away We can beat them, just for one day We can be heroes, just for one day
And you, you can be mean And I, I'll drink all the time 'Cause we're lovers, and that is a fact Yes we're lovers, and that is that Though nothing will keep us together We could steal time just for one day We can be heroes for ever and ever What d'you say?
I, I wish you could swim Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim Though nothing, nothing will keep us together We can beat them, for ever and ever Oh we can be Heroes, just for one day
I, I will be king And you, you will be queen Though nothing will drive them away We can be Heroes, just for one day We can be us, just for one day
I, I can remember (I remember) Standing, by the wall (by the wall) And the guns, shot above our heads (over our heads) And we kissed, as though nothing could fall (nothing could fall) And the shame, was on the other side Oh we can beat them, for ever and ever Then we could be Heroes, just for one day
We can be Heroes We can be Heroes We can be Heroes Just for one day We can be Heroes
We're nothing, and nothing will help us Maybe we're lying, then you better not stay But we could be safer, just for one day
Oh-oh-oh-ohh, oh-oh-oh-ohh, just for one day
We look forward to reading your poetry. After you link your poem, be sure to visit other poets who link. The prompt will close Sunday at 8 p.m. Eastern.
Good day, Poet Friends. It is going to be so interesting for me to read your poems this week about heroes. I am finding many heroes these days. Unexpected ones. Looking forward to reading about yours!
Any David Bowie fans? I was never really a big Bowie fan when the song I shared above was popular. But I really like it now. I am listening to a lot of old music recently, and many of them resonate with me in a way they didn't when they were popular songs of the day.
Thanks for the prompt, Mary. I am seeing some heroes too rising in response to what is happening in our world. Those old songs take me back to my youth, when life was full of hope and dreams could still come true. And some of them did. I also love the music of my parents' day, the songs I was raised hearing.
Ah, those old songs remind me of times when it all seemed possible.....and often was. David Bowie dedicated the song above to his son (in the concert). And children everywhere. Now all grown up. I thought that was touching!
Ha! Back in the 90's or early 2000's my son had a video hockey game and this song was the music that played when it was turned on! I had never heard it until then.

DeleteHow wonderful to be a hero for a day and then go home again, a commoner, a happy one!

ReplyDeleteHi Mary, Loved theme you chose and was inspired by an intriguing South African saying that I based my poem on.
